The vessel is a landing ship – equipped to function as an aviation platform – with medical facilities, and is often used for humanitarian and disaster relief missions.
An MoD spokesperson said: “As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to heightened readiness as a precaution, should she be needed to assist in maritime tasks in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
The publication of the poll comes just hours after the US president threatened Iran with “death, fire and fury”, despite saying that the war in Iran will end “soon”.

Trump told reporters on Monday that “we took a little excursion” to the Middle East “to get rid of some evil”, adding: “And, I think you’ll see it’s going to be a short-term excursion.”
But hours later on social media, he wrote: “If Iran does anything that stops the flow of Oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America TWENTY TIMES HARDER than they have been hit thus far.”
In an apparent response to Trump’s remarks published in Iranian state media, a spokesperson for the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Ali Mohammad Naini, said: “Iran will determine when the war ends”.
