Indonesia assures Ramadan food stocks stable despite Middle East war

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan ensured that food supply during Ramadan until Eid al-Fitr will remain sufficient, with relatively controlled prices.

“During the fasting month until Eid, our food stock is more than sufficient. It is available and affordable,” Hasan said after a coordination meeting at Jakarta on Wednesday.

He noted that several food commodities had experienced price increases, such as chili and eggs, but the situation remains under control and within the government’s benchmark price range.

“Some prices have indeed risen, such as chili, but now they are starting to decline. Egg prices have also increased, but they are still within the benchmark price,” he said.

The minister also ensured that the conflict in the Middle East will not affect domestic food availability because Indonesia does not rely on food imports from the region.

“The Middle East war does not affect us in terms of food because we do not import any food products from the Middle East,” he said.

In addition to maintaining price stability, the government has been pushing for domestic food production to anticipate potential disruptions in global oil supply.

He added that the government is preparing several projects to boost protein production, including fish ponds, biofloc systems, and the development of laying hens and broiler chicken fattening.

The government previously planned to build large-scale fish ponds covering around 20 thousand hectares on Java Island, as well as develop fish ponds in 500 districts and cities.

The program will also be strengthened by the plan to build around two thousand Red and White Fishermen Villages in 2026.

“The President has instructed that our food production must continue to increase. This year we will massively develop protein production,” Hasan said.
