Indonesia envisions national music as a global soft power instrument

“We hope that Indonesian music will become a frontliner of our culture on the international stage. As other countries have leveraged music as soft power, we envision an ‘Indonesian wave’ emerging from our own musical wealth,” he remarked.
The minister highlighted Indonesia’s musical strength during an event marking the 2026 National Music Day in Banten on Monday, March 9, according to a statement received on Tuesday.
This year’s celebration carried the theme “Indonesian Tone, World Resonance,” reflecting the country’s appreciation of its musical heritage, rooted in cultural diversity, and its ambition to gain global recognition.
Zon endorsed the theme, stating that Indonesia has the potential to become a global cultural powerhouse. He underscored the link between its heterogeneous population and musical creativity.
He pointed out that the country is home to 1,340 ethnic groups with hundreds of traditional musical instruments that have fueled the growth of its music industry.
“Indonesian music, ranging from traditional to contemporary, has huge potential for continuous development. We can expect a more enabling ecosystem to emerge through synergy between musicians, artists, cultural figures, and the government,” he said.
The minister highlighted the National Talent Management program as part of government efforts to preserve traditional music by involving young people.
On the same occasion, Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya described National Music Day as momentum for the nation to amplify its musical influence globally.
“Indonesian music is composed of cultural wealth, creativity, and remarkable youth energy, making it a potential driver of the creative economy and soft power on the global stage,” he said.
Meanwhile, Manpower Minister Yassierli said the government is committed to fostering a professional and inclusive landscape for creative industries while strengthening social protection for musicians.
