Jakarta (ANTARA) –

The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has granted Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri remissions to 155,908 inmates across Indonesia.

The remission decrees were symbolically handed over by the ministry’s Director General of Corrections Mashudi at the Gunung Sindur Narcotics Penitentiary here on Saturday.

Mashudi said that the special remission and sentence reduction reflected the state’s commitment to fulfilling inmates’ rights after they successfully completed guidance and development programs.

“Special Eid al-Fitr remission and sentence reductions are granted as a form of state appreciation for inmates who have shown positive behavioral change and participated well in development programs,” Mashudi said.

He explained that of the 155,908 recipients, 154,785 were prisoners and 1,123 were juvenile inmates. Of the prisoners, 153,642 received partial remission, while 1,143 were immediately released.

Meanwhile, 1,104 juvenile inmates received partial reductions and 19 were released.

The largest number of recipients came from West Java with 18,335, followed by North Sumatra with 15,621 and East Java with 14,244.

Mashudi delivered written remarks from Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, stating that remission is a form of state appreciation.

“We hope this momentum will further motivate inmates to improve themselves and prepare for reintegration into society,” he said.

The minister highlighted that the remission policy has a positive impact on state budget efficiency.

“This policy contributes to budget savings in inmates’ food needs, with potential savings reaching Rp109.2 billion,” he noted.

The granting of special remissions and sentence reductions is expected to encourage all inmates to maintain good behavior, actively participate in development programs, and prepare to reintegrate into society as productive and responsible individuals.
