Police forecast March 24 as start of busy Eid al-Fitr return traffic

“The peak of return traffic is expected to start on March 24,” Listyo said alongside Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI), General Agus Subiyanto, and North Sumatra Deputy Governor Surya, after monitoring the takbiran night security measures here on Friday.
The statement follows the start of the homecoming traffic peak on March 18, which saw a 4.26 percent increase in vehicle volume compared to last year. Listyo noted a 3.23 percent reduction in traffic accident fatalities during the homecoming period.
“We advise travelers to remain cautious. Use rest areas and integrated posts for breaks, and avoid rushing, as it could endanger safety,” he said.
Authorities have coordinated with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) for weather modification to address potential extreme conditions.
“All disaster task forces at integrated posts must be prepared for floods or landslides along travel routes,” Listyo added.
The police chief also urged water tourism operators to ensure safety equipment is available and that visitor numbers do not exceed capacity.
To control congestion during Eid return traffic, the government recommends using the Work From Anywhere (WFA) program from March 25–27 and complying with vehicle restrictions for three-axle trucks until March 29.
“I instruct all Police and TNI personnel to secure Eid celebrations under the motto ‘Safe Homecoming, Happy Families,’” Listyo said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Surya outlined road infrastructure in North Sumatra, mapping three main routes which include western, central, and eastern routes.
Surya also reported significant post-disaster recovery progress across 12 districts and cities in North Sumatra.
Repairs have been completed at 263 landslide sites, 19 broken road sections, and 65 collapsed points.
