Indonesia faces urgent heat crisis, MPR calls for climate action

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Chairman of People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has emphasized the need for responsive policies and actions to address the extreme heat conditions that have recently affected the country.

According to him, the current climate situation has reached a worrying phase, with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reporting the highest air temperatures in Indonesia on March 18.

“I have called for urgent measures to address climate issues causing global temperature increases due to carbon emissions, rising pollution, and rapid deforestation,” he said in a statement received here on Monday.

He revealed that BMKG recently recorded extreme temperatures in Jakarta at the top of the list, reaching 35.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Ciputat at 35.5 degrees Celsius and Tangerang at 35.4 degrees Celsius.

Soeparno said he prefers to describe the current situation not as climate change, but as a climate crisis.

He noted that unprecedented temperature increases, worsening air pollution, and reforestation efforts that lag behind deforestation are among Indonesia’s key environmental challenges.

He stressed the importance of strong political commitment, along with the implementation of mitigation, adaptation, and public education programs to ensure broad participation in addressing climate issues.

He added that the administration of President Prabowo Subianto has demonstrated support in various domestic and international forums.

“All stakeholders, both government and non-government, must work together to accelerate climate action, as the climate crisis affects everyone regardless of background,” he said.

Indonesia has also included a Draft Law on Climate Change Management in the 2026 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

“I hope the bill can be discussed and passed soon, as addressing the climate crisis requires strong legal backing,” Soeparno added.
