Megawati hosts Timor-Leste President Ramos-Horta in Jakarta

Ramos-Horta was received by senior members of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), including Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto.
“Please, have a seat,” Megawati said, according to a statement released Monday.
The meeting lasted about two and a half hours, featuring closed-door discussions with strong historical and strategic undertones.
It concluded with an exchange of symbolic gifts: Megawati presented a piece of traditional Indonesian batik and her book Spirit Kemanusiaan (Spirit of Humanity), reflecting her global advocacy for humanitarian values. Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, reciprocated with a traditional Timor-Leste handicraft bag and the country’s renowned Arabica coffee.
The exchange underscored cultural heritage and economic identity, while highlighting the close relationship between the two nations, the statement said.
Monday’s talks followed a previous dialogue in Abu Dhabi in February 2026, during the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity series.
Megawati and Ramos-Horta share ties that extend beyond formal diplomacy. She has often spoken of her emotional connection with Timor-Leste figures, including Kupa Lopez, the country’s ambassador to Cambodia, whom she regards as family.
For Ramos-Horta, Megawati symbolizes reconciliation—her presence at Timor-Leste’s independence restoration ceremony in 2002 remains a historic milestone in easing post-referendum tensions.
Ramos-Horta has formally invited Megawati to Dili to receive the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the nation’s highest honor, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to international peace.
