Indonesia’s MPR eyes electric stoves to cut LPG import bill

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia could achieve greater budget efficiency by reallocating funds from imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking to programs encouraging households to switch to electric stoves, a lawmaker said.

“Our calculations indicate that the transition to electric stoves will cost less than LPG imports,” Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno told ANTARA when contacted from Jakarta on Monday.

He referred to an assessment conducted by the House of Representatives (DPR) and state electricity company PLN during his previous term as deputy chair of DPR Commission VII in 2022.

The assessment, he said, showed Indonesia could save up to Rp330 billion (more than US$19 million) by redirecting budgets to transition aid for 300,000 households, including electric stoves, frying pans, and free installation of dedicated electrical connections.

“If the electric stove policy is implemented, we need to ensure adequate production capacity for such stoves so we do not have to resort to imported products,” Soeparno said.

The legislator argued that the energy transition option has become increasingly reasonable, especially since LPG prices are closely tied to oil, which has been rising globally amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

He noted that reports show Brent crude has surpassed US$100 per barrel, far above the average of US$64 recorded in January 2023.

“Indonesia imports 75 percent of its LPG needs, whose prices follow crude oil,” he stressed.

Soeparno said he would continue supporting the government’s efforts to accelerate electrification across sectors, including transportation, industry, and household consumption.

The discourse on shifting from LPG stoves to electric ones was first introduced during the administration of the seventh president Joko Widodo. In September 2022, PLN decided to shelve the plan, citing the country’s ongoing economic recovery from COVID-19.
