AFL Cairns x Calder Cannons

AFL Cairns is delighted to announce that during next month’s Under 17s immersion trip to Melbourne, as part of our Cairns Lions representative program, our players will have the opportunity to take on the Calder Cannons.

The Cannons are widely recognised across the football industry as a true “football factory,” having produced AFL talent for decades and developing numerous AFL draft selections through their high-performance program. Their reputation in the media and within the game reflects the strength and consistency of the program they have built over many years.

AFL Cairns General Manager Craig Lees said the opportunity would be a significant experience for the region’s emerging players.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our players to be exposed to one of the country’s premier talent programs. To test themselves against a club like Calder, which has produced AFL talent for decades, is a rare opportunity and something that will inspire our players to aspire to the highest levels of the game.”

Calder Cannons Talent Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo welcomed the opportunity to host the Cairns program and showcase the club’s high-performance environment.

“We are very excited to welcome and host the AFL Cairns U17 representative program and it’s talented young athletes to our region.

We are grateful to be based in Melbourne and in the thick of the day in, day out culture of footy, and this is a great opportunity for Calder Cannons staff and players to showcase their leadership and for our region to share our experiences with the coaches and players from the AFL Cairns program.

The game is also another fantastic for players from our region to display their skills and attributes against a representative program from another state.”
