Habiburokhman, chair of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, said the attack contradicts the administration’s efforts to strengthen human rights protection under President Prabowo Subianto.
The remarks were delivered as part of the commission’s conclusions following a special meeting discussing the case.
“We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn the acid attack because it is not merely an ordinary crime, but a crime against democracy,” Habiburokhman told reporters at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Monday.
He said Yunus, who serves as deputy coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, is entitled to protection under both national laws and international human rights frameworks recognized by Indonesia.
Habiburokhman emphasized that Yunus should receive full legal protection not only as a citizen but also as a human rights defender.
He also urged the government, through the Indonesian Health Ministry, to ensure the best possible medical treatment and recovery support for the victim.
In addition, the legislator called on the Witness and Victim Protection Agency to coordinate with relevant institutions and provide special protection for Yunus, his family and his organization.

The agency was also asked to safeguard other individuals linked to the victim to prevent further acts of violence.
Earlier, Yunus was attacked by unidentified assailants who threw a corrosive substance at him.
The assault left him with burns on his hands and legs as well as impaired vision.
The incident occurred shortly after Yunus finished recording a podcast at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation.
The discussion focused on militarism and a judicial review of Indonesia’s military law.
According to initial information gathered by authorities, the attack took place late on Thursday night, March 12.
At around 11:37 p.m. local time, Yunus was riding a motorcycle along Salemba I Street in Jakarta when the incident occurred.
Police are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
