Indonesia seeks to globalize Bahasa Indonesia via creative economy

Wijaya stated that the discussion, which he held with the president’s Special Staff for Creative Economy Yovie Widianto and Special Envoy for Youth and Artists Development Raffi Ahmad, was productive, emphasizing cross-sectoral coordination.
“One of the main points discussed was positioning the Indonesian language not only as a medium of communication, but also as a form of creative capital and national identity to drive the growth of the creative economy,” the Cabinet Secretary said regarding the meeting, as confirmed on Thursday.
As a national identity, the Indonesian language must be globalized through popular media such as art, films, and music, he stressed.
Wijaya highlighted South Korea’s soft diplomacy success in globalizing the Korean language through K-pop and Korean films, as well as China’s efforts in promoting the Chinese language worldwide.
“South Korea has introduced some Korean words through art, such as ‘saranghae’ (I love you). While China introduced words such as ‘ni hao’ (hello) and ‘xie xie (thank you),” he explained.
He believed that the Indonesian language has the same potential to be renowned globally through films, music, and other cultural aspects.
“From hundreds of thousands of Indonesian words, there must be one or two words known by the global community,” Wijaya said.
“Through music, film, and art, let us spread the culture and Indonesian language to the international world,” he remarked.
The Indonesian language has been recognized as the 10th official language of UNESCO on November 20, 2023, following the unanimous adoption of Resolution 42 C/28 during the 42nd Session of the UNESCO General Conference.
