Regions urged to anticipate increase in waste during Eid holiday

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated during a visit to the Kampung Rambutan Terminal in Jakarta on Tuesday that the Ministry of Transportation projected that approximately 143.9 million people would participate in the Eid homecoming this year.
“There are about 143 million people moving from major cities to regions. This means we can estimate the total waste by multiplying that figure by 0.5 kilograms per day,” he said.
He explained that the waste typically produced in cities like Jakarta will shift to homecoming destinations, which vary in their waste management facilities and capabilities.
“We have instructed and requested mayors and district heads, as the primary officials responsible for waste management, to address this immediately,” he added.
Minister Nurofiq reminded regional governments that all necessary waste management regulations are already in place and urged them to follow these provisions strictly.
Previously, the Ministry of Transportation predicted that the peak of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming travel would occur on Wednesday, March 18, with an estimated 21.97 million people traveling on that day alone.
The Ministry of Transportation announced that 143.9 million people are projected to travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr travel season, slightly lower than last year’s survey result of 146 million.
This figure is based on a survey conducted by the ministry to identify travel preferences and gauge the public’s intent to travel.
Despite the lower projection, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the realization in 2025 reached 154 million, meaning people’s mobility during the Eid al-Fitr holiday season tends to surpass the survey figure.
Regarding the preferred transportation modes, he stated that private cars are predicted to remain the top choice with 76.24 million travelers, followed by motorcycles and buses.
