Indonesia to pioneer trial of G20-backed carbon credit data model

The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs formalized the agreement to test the data model—developed by the CDSC under the guidance of the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group—in order to strengthen standards and transparency in the national carbon market.
“Indonesia is committed to developing a high-integrity carbon market that supports national climate targets,” said Nani Hendiarti, the ministry’s deputy for coordination on food affordability and safety, in a statement cited here on Tuesday.
She explained that the government intends to incorporate the CCCDM into Indonesia’s Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), in line with Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025 on carbon economic value.
The strategy, she continued, is aimed at synchronizing the domestic carbon market with international best practices while building investor confidence in Indonesia’s carbon trading foundation.
“By testing this global data model, we intend to reaffirm Indonesia’s leadership in climate action, safeguard natural resources, and pave the way for sustainable development,” Hendiarti noted.
In the same statement, CDSC Chair Mary Schapiro lauded Indonesia’s initiative, describing it as a major step toward compiling high-quality climate data.
She said Indonesia’s success in testing the CCCDM would set a good precedent that demonstrates how global standards can be effective and compatible with national models.
Schapiro explained that the data model is designed to tackle major challenges in carbon trading, including the lack of uniform standards for data across systems—an issue that has long impeded transparency and accountability.
She added that the model provides a single data framework to prevent double counting and facilitate due diligence for carbon traders.
The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs reported that more than 35 public and private entities worldwide had expressed interest in following Indonesia’s lead in carbon data management.
